A description of Drama at Jasspa ...

Drama courses at Jasspa are a great combination of skills-based classes and preparation for performance (with the exception of our under 6’s who do not perform with us until they are in Year 2 at school).

Drama at Jasspa is designed to challenge, inspire and develop all round performing skills. The environment is stimulating and encouraging and promotes pupil confidence and creativity. All our teachers bring to Jasspa a wealth of different experiences from different drama backgrounds, either as teachers, performers or directors. If your child stays with us for a number of years they should expect to benefit from working with a variety of tutors, each of whom offer their own particular specialisms whilst following a general class format. Whilst Jasspa Drama does not have a rigid curriculum all classes are workshop in style and encourage focus, discipline and team work through:

Improvisation—fostering spontaneity, self-confidence and group awareness.
Theatre styles—eg. Physical Theatre, Mask work, Melodrama
Performance techniques—vocal work, movement skills and characterisation.
Creating a piece for presentation.
Script writing and interpretation for senior classes.

No previous experience is required to join JASSPA’s Drama classes. Pupils are grouped primarily according to age (up to a two year age band for Infants and Juniors and a three year age band for Seniors). Pupil assessment continues throughout the year. In addition we offer ADVANCED DRAMA - a challenging class for our oldest pupils. Entry to this class is by audition at the start of the Autumn term.

All classes perform once a year in our annual Dance and Drama Shows. Preparation for this begins approximately 10 weeks before the performance date and gives a fantastic focus to the summer term. Venues for our shows are: The Prissian Theatre, JAGS and The Holst Hall, JAGS. (Please note, from 2012-13 Advanced Drama will perform in the spring term to avoid clashing with school exams.)

Wear comfortable clothes to Drama – no short skirts! The Dance uniform can of course be worn to Drama classes.

Originally designed and delivered by Jasspa drama teacher Spencer Feltham, we now have two groups running due to popular demand. These classes both run from 10.00-10.40am and are taught by Spencer and Jasspa teacher Roberta Zuric.

Our Infant Drama classes are open to children in Reception and Year 1. Classes explore drama through a range of broad stories including traditional, topical and original. Every child is encouraged to take an active part in the sharing and re-telling of stories through:

Characterisation- exploring physical and vocal qualities
Improvisation – developing spontaneity, self-confidence and group awareness
Team work – working together in a creative, focussed and disciplined manner

Unlike other group lessons at Jasspa, Infant Drama can be booked termly so new pupils can be allocated a place when a space becomes available.

WATCHING CLASS- There is no formal performance for Jasspa’s Reception and Year 1 pupils, but parents are invited to watch one lesson each term. This is an opportunity to see your child working with their peers and teacher and for your child to show the journey they take each week in Infant Drama.

For new children joining a class, parents are welcome to attend the first session.

COST 2012-13
£7.25 per lesson
Lesson Length – 40 minutes scheduled between 10.00am and 10.40am

Autumn term £87.00
Spring term £65.25
Summer term £65.25

Commitment to Infant Drama: We realise that annual commitment is tricky for our under 6’s but at the same time can’t offer these classes without some form of commitment from you. So we assume that your child intends to see out the year with us unless you tell us otherwise. This means if you find Infant Drama is not for your child, you must tell us by half term if your child will not be returning the following term. Effectively this means you will need to commit to a term at least a term, but could chose to stop at the beginning of the spring or summer terms. Notice of withdrawal should be given in writing to the Jasspa Administrator by emailing jasspa@jags.org.uk.

A description of Dance at Jasspa ...

Dance at JASSPA combines creativity with technique. Technical exercises are taken from both contemporary and jazz styles helping pupils develop muscular strength, flexibility and agility. Exercises explore rhythm and mood, generating routines and improvisations. Pupils are given the opportunity to contribute towards choreography and a wide variety of styles are explored through pre-recorded tracks, eg Contemporary, Musical Theatre, Classical Jazz and Commercial Dance. Dance classes encourage focus, discipline and team work enhancing not only group performances but also life skills.

No previous experience is required to join JASSPA’s Dance classes although many pupils do come to us whilst attending formal ballet, tap and modern classes elsewhere or having decided that they are looking for a new direction with their dance.

Pupils are grouped primarily according to age (up to a two year age band for Juniors and a four year age band for Seniors) but also by annual informal assessment. At the start of the Autumn term pupils and teachers work together in large classes until assessments are finished. Then each child is placed into the most appropriate class for them, still within their peer group. For pupils joining Jasspa after September an informal assessment is carried out during their first class. Assessments do not change lessons times.

All classes perform once a year in our annual Dance and Drama Shows. Preparation for this begins approximately 10 weeks before the performance date and gives a fantastic focus to the summer term. Venues for our shows are: The Prissian Theatre, JAGS and The Holst Hall, JAGS.

Dance uniform

Juniors: matt black jazz pants/black leggings/black jogging bottoms and black fitted t-shirt.
Seniors/Advanced: own choice of colour jazz pants/leggings/jogging bottoms and fitted t-shirt.

The majority of class is spent in bare feet but for routines, black school-style plimsolls or black jazz shoes may be required.

Four Youth Orchestras …..

Established in the home of James Allen’s Saturday School for the Performing Arts, South London Youth Orchestra is an orchestral experience designed to nurture and train young musicians to be inspired orchestral players, encouraging them to perform to their highest abilities.

SLYO is not one orchestra but a family of orchestras each offering vision, ambition and excellence. At the heart of our organisation are professional conductors, outstanding tuition from the best musicians in the profession and fine repertoire. Serving the diverse and wide communities of South London our collaborating orchestras work with beginners to advanced students aged 8-19.

History: SLYO was launched in August 2010 with 65 young musicians taking part in our inaugural course and concert. We now have over 150 members including those in our flourishing first orchestra for advanced musicians. SLYO runs three times a year – during the Summer, Christmas and Easter holidays. Attending each course is not compulsory but to get the most out of the experience it is to be recommended. Regular membership allows exciting and challenging repertoire to be explored and brings clear musical and social benefits. We hope your child will want to attend regularly, but if they are unable to do so they are most welcome to re-join us in the future where spaces permit. Rehearsals and concerts currently take place in The Holst Hall, JAGS Music School and JAPS Hall but in the future SLYO will take place in the James Allen’s Community Music Centre, all in Dulwich SE22.

Our Orchestras: Fourth Orchestra (for violin and cello) combines general musicianship, good string technique and fun repertoire. Third Orchestra (for violin, cello and double bass) continues this journey whilst introducing more challenging repertoire and developing ensemble skills. Musicians in the First and Second Orchestras (both symphony orchestras with full string, wind, brass and percussion sections) are lead through the vast classic and film orchestral repertoire. All courses culminate in inspired final performances.

With SLYO you can expect life-long friendships, leadership, tours, artistic collaboration with an underlying aim to bring a fresh musical experience to the heart of South London. Please click on individual pages for booking forms and further course details.
